Eduardo Leon Mejia

December 30, 1978 — March 17, 2023

Atlanta, Georgia

Eduardo Leon Mejia of Atlanta, Georgia, died peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2023, at Emory Midtown Hospital after a series of recent health battles. He departed while surrounded by friends and family throughout the week, including his beloved aunts and uncle who were waiting on his arrival 44 years ago, as well as his close-knit group of friends first formed as a 6th-grade student at Woodward Academy and continuing through his time at the University of Georgia and into adulthood.

Ed was an explorer at heart, and by the time he was 25 had extensively traveled throughout the world, especially Asia. By the end of his life Ed had not only become fascinated by the culture, having been to the region close to 100 times for business, but had made the region’s history the focus of his nearly completed history PHD dissertation at Georgia State University. Before deciding to professionally transition into his lifelong love of history by earning a master’s degree and entering the PHD program at GSU, Ed had spent 15 years in the international business world, alternating between his extensive world travel for business and a love of adventure. Ed competed on multiple amateur teams in the world-famous Baja 3000 race, dove the world’s best dive spots as a Master SCUBA Diver, and ate at the world’s best restaurants, but he always returned to his native Atlanta and his friends, family, and beloved dog Maggie (who all knew him by his impeccable dress and extensive collection of bow ties worn no matter how casual the occasion). Ed is survived by his younger brother and sister-in-law Mr. Gabriel and Georgia Mejia of Peachtree City, as well as his nephews Wyatt, 6, and Wallace, 3.  The boys’ final memory of their Uncle Ed will (appropriately) be of him letting them ride the merry-go-round at extreme speeds (until injury), letting them sword fight inside (also until injury and nearly causing a retaliatory blood feud between brothers), and showing them an R rated war movie, before giving them a mid-day dessert and swearing them to secrecy. They will miss him greatly.

As Ed was fond of saying, it was a “Life Less Ordinary”, even if cut way too short.

Graveside services will be held at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Georgia, on Saturday, April 22, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, Ed (probably) would ask that you go travel. Or at least go have a nice dinner at Bones.
