Shaw & I are very pleased with your sympathy and compassion during our greatest hour of need.”
Michael joined the Macon Bibb County Fire Department in 1972 and loyally served for 25 years before retiring. Many a happy and sad occasion were shared amongst his peers at Station 5, gathered around the table for a Soul Food meal prepared by Michael himself. Nothing pleased him more than sharing a meal with his brother & sister firefighters in good times and bad. He made sure those under his watch were properly fed and clothed. He was very instrumental with their uniforms and safety gear. Like most firefighters then and now, his second job was with Banner Uniforms. He made sure under his watch and especially his shift that everybody ate well and looked properly dressed. He’d say, “you never know who’s going to walk in our door, let’s be prepared when they arrive.” He applied this wisdom to every aspect of his life. It’s all about the details. Boy did I NEVER know how our worlds would eventually collide and everything would be all about the DETAILS. Sergent Michael L. Shaw retired from the Macon Bibb County Fire Department after 25 years of loyal service. He then entered the private sector like most of us and found it to be just as or if not more challenging than working as a Community Public Servant. He would at least say he could call his team and get everything sorted out when he worked for his municipal government. He mastered the art and understood the concept of His Brotherhood Community. It really is a thing and we as a society owe this Brotherhood of brave men and women our gratitude for protecting us daily 24/7, 365 days a year. Michael attended Bibb County Public schools, plus Mercer University along with all the required classes at the GA Department of Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth while employed with the Macon Bibb County Fire Department and later the State of GA Motor Compliance Division where his nearly 40-year public community service would end and he would begin the next chapter of life as a Parts Delivery man at Walsh Honda. Shaw found this private sector job to be a great fit for him. He loved his co-workers and new best friend Derrick Preston with all his heart. They had their own brotherhood thing. Michael is survived by his wife and best friend Robin H. Shaw; loyal and faithful Labrador Retrievers Jett & Ally; along with our daughters, Christy Shaw Whited, Natalie Shaw Gibson; son Matthew Lang; sister, Cherie Shaw Jump; brother, Randy Shaw; grandchildren, Carson, Hilliard and John Douglas Shaw, Hunter, Gavin & Haley Whited, and great-grandchildren Lily & Lizzy Whited; niece and nephews, Matthew Jump, Ian Jump, Melissa Shaw Moore, Jj Shaw, Austin Bryant and Rebekah Bryant; great-niece and Best Little Buddy, Brayley Floyd; and Mother-in-law Rose Sikes; along with the Lower Bibb County Supper Club; and all the attendees of M & Rs Insanely Fun Party yearlong celebration of this legendary Hero, Michael L. Shaw. “It was a fun and memorable year for sure! We gave it all we had and y’all showed up and out. On behalf of my hero, thank you! I have a lifetime of memorable moments and hope you do as well. Thanks to everyone for loving my and our Firefighter! Rest in Peace, Shaw! We will see you on Heaven’s Baseball Diamond sidelines with Jason frying those delicious turkeys, working on all those details. I can smell and taste them now!”
