James "Buck" Herring

 
James “Buck” Herring, 73, of Macon, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 2:00 PM, at Sardis-Heard Funeral Home.    

Buck was known as the kindest and most generous person anyone could ever meet.  He was a hard-working man; everyone knew to call on “PawPaw” if anything needed to be fixed.  He loved riding motorcycles and playing the guitar until his health prevented him from it.  Even with his health struggles, nothing could ever prevent him from loving his family and spending time with them.   

Buck retired as an engineer from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation, where he spent many years opening factories across the United States and even internationally. He was even recognized for obtaining a patent for a part he designed to help a factory machine run more efficiently.  

After his official retirement, he continued to do consultant work on projects for them and other companies until he and his wife, Carol adopted two of their grandsons, which he then devoted most of his time to raising. While supporting them by volunteering at Heard school, he became well known as the "ice-cream man" as he sold the treats after lunch.  

Although in recent years his health began to fail him, he spent many days in doctor’s offices and doing physical therapy where he pushed on. He was determined to care for his wife Carol, as her daily caregiver, and to see that the boys had all their wants and needs met to the best of his ability.   

He was a member of Thomaston Road Church of Christ in Macon, Georgia, where he was baptized.   

He will be greatly missed.  

Buck is survived by his lovely wife, Carol B. Herring; his children, Robert Herring, Sabrina Herring, Nicolas Herring (Avari), Logan Thomas, Noah Thomas; his stepdaughter, Kari Brooks (Scott); his ten grandchildren, Lacey, Zach, Brittney, Heaven, Alex, Kage, Harlow, Hayes, Jarred, and Cierra; several great-grandchildren; his sister, Corliss Barfield; his close nephew, Steve Barton (Wendy); his niece, Naomi Orsenigo; his nieces, Patricia Herring Kitchens (Wayne) and Katherine Herring.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Willie Edward Herring and Lucile Strom Herring; his daughter, Samantha Herring; his son, James Herring; his nephew, David Barton (Lynn); and siblings, Benjamin Herring and Athaleen Smith.
