Jay was born on June 26, 1969, in Warner Robins, Georgia. He worked as a mechanic at Tall Paul’s Campers. Jay was a motorcycle enthusiast and drag racer. He was the epitome of a family man; he adored them all, especially his grandbabies. There was nothing Jay would not do for them. Although he was a hardheaded man, he would give you the shirt off his back. Jay never met a stranger. He could fix anything and many people would come to help for him.
Jay was preceded in death by his father, Sammy Edwin McElhenney; maternal grandparents, Wade and Juanita Jackson; paternal grandparents, Edward C. and Mary Lou Barnes, and Theron Walker McElhenney; niece, Harley Angel McElhenney; brother-in-law and best friend, Matthew Kersey; cousin and best friend, Brian Jackson; and father-in-law, Wade Purvis, Sr.
Jay is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tasha Purvis McElhenney; daughter, Maranda McElhenney (Matthew Adams); son, Tyler McElhenney; grandchildren, Ryder and Riley McElhenney; mother, Aurye Jackson McElhenney; sisters, Wende McDowell (Steven) and Tara Hatten (Shelton); brother, Travis McElhenney; stepbrothers, Rodney and Shea Kent; mother-in-law, Ann Hudgins; sister-in-law, Kathy Purvis; brother-in-law, Wade Purvis, Jr. (Christy); numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a host of friends.
